Wednesday's Word - Taking the Lord's Name in Vain
It’s most common that when people use certain ‘sware’ words, they are said to be taking the Lord’s name in vain. What do we mean by that? I think that a suitable contemporary definition would be “Not showing proper respect for the Name of the Sovereign Lord”. And that’s fine if you restrain your tongue from uttering the name Jesus Christ, God or Holy (or any combination thereof) unless it’s in the context of reverence and utmost respect. But why stop there?
Here’s the word:
Mark 6b-7 This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
The people of Jesus’ day were so overly concerned with a plethora of rules and addendums to the Law (Torah) that they’d overlooked the heart of the matter. In God’s heart, you matter not just you but ALL people. Living for Him is not what’s best for Him; it’s what’s best for us. Not living according to His Word? It’s just as bad as taking the Lord’s name in vain.
