Clothed In My Right Mind
You know, growing up in church, one of the things I remember most was ‘Testimony Night’. There’s one statement, heard rather frequently that particularly stands out:
“He woke me up this mornin’ clothed in my right mind…” And it’s there, where I want to focus today’s attention. As I’d hear that phrase, I just thought they were being unnecessarily wordy. I mean how hard can it be to wake up in your right mind? How often do you hear in the news where the ambulance has to go get somebody out of the bed and take them straight to the mental hospital cause they didn’t wake up in their right mind? Now, I know it sounds like I’m trying to be funny, but that was my immature mindset. Those people were simply speaking on something that I’ve only recently come to understand;
Here’s the word:
Romans 1:28 (mid-verse) God gave them over to a reprobate mind,
1 Samuel 16:14 Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD terrorized him. (if this verse confuses you let me know).
Col 1:21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled
2 Tim 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Titus 1:15 but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.
I've used a phrase very familiar to me as a child, and I realize that this verse, being from Mark 5:15 (or Luke 8:35) is properly rendered as "Clothed and in my right mind"... The point is this: There is truly a whole spiritual realm going on right in our midsts, and I bet that if we could see it visually, it would probably scare us to death! But the fact of the matter remains; God is active in that spiritual realm and He’s actively progressing His plan’s for you. (Jer 29:11)
There are dark forces probably begging to have you and they’re not just jumping up and down crazy like a kid in a toy store, they’re submitting well thought out arguments on why God SHOULD let them have you. I’m not perfect, …heck, I can honestly say that I’m not even always obedient to do what I KNOW is right. But He doesn’t give me over, When I sin, I’m convicted and repentant, my mind doesn’t become immune to it (defiled)… Those older people at Testimony Night had is exactly right…..He keeps me clothed in my right mind.

I am from the old school, but also came up hearing 'woke me up clothed in my right mind'. Although I have known for a little while what it meant, I loved your explanation for those who may not have known. Always backing up supposition with scripture is the way to go. I'm not from Missouri but I use their "show me" when it comes to the bible. Give me chapter and verse. Be Blessed. MsCros - ChiTown
Thanks to MsCros (my Momma) for correcting the phrase as being 'clothed' in my right mind....I've changed the title and text to reflect it.
Hey stumbled upon your post this morning and wanted to add Mark 5:15 to the mix.
An anonymous passerby wanted to make the comment that "It's clothed AND in my right mind." I understand that this could probably be the "proper" way to say it, but as I shared 'my' experience, I am stating it the way I heard it. I wonder if this was the same anonymous that wanted me to define "hypocrite" even though I hadn't used it in my post.
I find that this quote is missunderstood. Here we are referring to the insane man in the grave yard naked and abusing his body. What is ment by this quote is that when Jesus has delivered him, and he comes to himself he finds that he is not naked and is now in his right mind. Should we be "I was clothed and in my right mind".
Yes Charles, I agree with you. That's exactly how I interpreted this scripture.
The three stages - this person was sitting, clothed and in his right mind.
Love the clarity of the scriptures and not just having
an emotional pow-wow
The expression found in Mark 5:15 and Luke 8: 35 refers to a man commonly called the demoniac. This demon-possessed individual lived among the tombs, wore no clothing and often broke free from chains intended to control him. When Jesus had cast the “Legion” of demons out, the people of the city were surprised to see him clothed AND in his right mind.
I can see how the expression “clothed in my right mind” arose out of the telling and retelling of this story. The fact that he was clothed was evidence of the healing of his mind and, surely, we can all be thankful that, daily, the Lord sustains and protects us from from the madness. What a wonderful day it will be when he returns and the madness is gone forever.

The enemy will always leave you naked and ashamed with a spirit of condemnation. God will always leave clothed and in a right frame of mind which leads to Him and never away. John 15:1 I am the true vine and My Father is the vinedresser..... Excepting the will of God even as His son did will leave you fully dressed for any attack of the enemy.
